Holy Goat

Friday Fictioneers with Rochelle, our fearless leader, is here again with a photo by Randy Mazie. No goats were harmed in the making of this post.

“There,” Benjamin stabbed dramatically at the computer screen.
“I can’t see anything—your finger is in the way,” Zeke muttered.
Ben scowled, pulling away; Zeke studied the photo.
“All I see are a bunch of goats and some guy on a wall,” Zeke said.
“Look at the carving on the headstone,” Ben jabbed the screen again.
“Stop. Doing. That,” Zeke pulled his laptop away.
Zeke squinted at the washed-out tombstone in the forefront. Nose inches away from the screen, he gasped.
“It’s the last marker for the Prophecy, Ezekiel. We found it,” Ben said, voice hushed.
      Zeke dropped the laptop.

  1. OH, this was priceless! I had almost written a similar style piece, ie, me the writer musing about the photo, and how it would be all too easy to write some Sacrificial Satanic Goat Ritual type thing. Or a horror story starring a Chupacabra… which is how I ended up with drunk grandpa.

    • I was going to do a sacrificial story only the goat is safe and the guy in the background is…not. Then I got distracted by the tombstone and voila!

I loved the title of your piece—perfection.

    • It was originally the final marker to the Holy Grail…I watched the Last Crusade last week. So I changed it up!

Glad the essence was still there though! Thanks for reading.

    • Right? Or even some relation to the guy with the falling brick wall. OR OR MAYBE ALL THREE ARE CONNECTED.

This is why we can’t have ice cream right before bed.

  3. Oh my god, I thought I had blurred it enough so that no one could make out the words or the symbols! Drat. The prophesy is out of the bag and all my prophets gone, too, I guess.

    Great story. Randy
May the Goats Be With You!

    • *evil laughter* Not enough for my computer geniuses…although they don’t seem very bright, do they?

Glad you liked it, thanks for the pictures!
      Bahhhlessings to you!

  4. This certainly sounds like how friends would talk to each other — and I like the ratcheting up of the mystery at the end with the marker. Powerful enough to drop a laptop!
